Kranjska Gora has an exceptionally rich tradition of folklore, passed down from generation to generation long before the birth of Josip Vandot. One of the most well-known storytellers was Peter Jakelj, known as Smerinjek, whose tales inspired Vandot to write the adventures of Kekec. Many of his literary characters have their roots in ancient myths and legends. The permanent exhibition presents Vandot’s heroes as described by Smerinjek, by Josip Vandot himself, and as we remember them from the films—all supported by the mythological origins of characters such as Pehta, Bedanec, Prisank, Vitranc, Škumpnjek, and others.
